HIPAA - Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. HIPAA is a law enacted by congress that may mean different things to different people. Patients get greater access to their own medical records and more control over how their personal health information is used.  It protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs. The Act also specifies new EDI formats.

The National Provider Identifier (NPI) In July 1993, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) undertook a project to develop a provider identification system to meet Medicare and Medicaid needs and ultimately a national identification system for all health care providers to meet the needs of other users and programs. This program is about to be implemented.
